ScholarshipAfter the death of two prominent members of the Chattanooga Serra Club, Bill Hubbuch and Jim Eberle, the Club established a scholarship in memory of all deceased members. It is one way in which the Club stimulates awareness and consideration of vocations to the priesthood and religious life among students at Notre Dame High School, their parents, family and friends. In addition to the primary purpose of encouraging the consideration of vocations, the Serra Club endeavors to encourage everyone within reach of the Club to become champions of our clergy and religious, and to show them the respect and appreciation they deserve. Qualifications of students nominated for the scholarship require that the candidate:
Students who qualify may be nominated for the scholarship by the NDHS staff and faculty, any priest or religious, or members of the Serra Club. A selection committee comprised of the Spiritual Director or Chaplin of NDHS, the Head of the NDHS Department of Religion, the Chaplin of the Serra Club, and a representative of the Club designated by the president, select an appropriate recipient from the pool of qualified students who are nominated for the award. Once selected, the president of the Club makes the presentation of the award at the NDHS Baccalaureate Ceremony each spring. The Club presented the first award in the spring of 2003 to Andrew Anderson, who is a student at East Tennessee State University. In 2004 the Club presented the award to Laura Goodhard who also is a student at ETSU. The 2005 winner was Kathleen Craig of the St. Jude Parish who went on to the University of Alabama at Huntsville. The 2006 winner was Linda Worley of the St. Jude Parish who will be attending Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL. |
